William H. Lewis has been associated with North African affairs since 1952. He conducted his doctoral research in the area under Ford Foundation sponsorship and has since held appointments in the Department of State and in the academic communityUniversity of Michigan, Georgetown University, and Johns Hopkins. Dr. Lewis has coauthored a number of books on Middle Eastern and African affairs and is a frequent contributor to professional journals. ABSTRACT: The North African littoral assumed special importance for the United States after the landing of American forces in November 1942. While the strategic-military weight assigned to the area by the West declined after 1956, with the growth of local nationalist movements and the relinquishment of French protectorate authority over Morocco and Tunisia, North Africa has acquired a unique political and economic significance and relevance for Western interests.
